Origins (1900–1910)
Washington Park was established in the early 1900s as part of the Hudson County park system. The park sits atop the Hudson Palisades, on land straddling the boundary between Union City (then West Hoboken / Union Hill) and the Jersey City Heights.
The park was designed by landscape architects Daniel W. Langton and Charles N. Lowrie — the same partnership behind several of Hudson County's most beloved green spaces, including Lincoln Park in Jersey City.
The park was named in honor of George Washington, the country's first president.
Memorials & Monuments
America Triumphant
The park's most prominent monument is America Triumphant, a bronze statue by sculptor James Novelli dedicated to the 147 Hudson County residents who lost their lives in World War I.

Additional memorials honor veterans of the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and other conflicts.
The Surrounding Communities
🇨🇺 Union City — “Havana on the Hudson”
Union City has long been one of the most vibrant Cuban-American communities in the United States. The park hosts community events tied to the annual Cuban Day Parade and other celebrations of Latin American heritage.
🏘️ Jersey City Heights
On the south side of the park, the Jersey City Heights is a historically working-class neighborhood that has become one of Hudson County's most diverse communities.
🤝 A Shared Park
Few parks in the New York metro area sit on a municipal boundary the way Washington Park does. The line between Union City and Jersey City literally runs through the lawns and paths.
